Psalm 14 begins: "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'" But before God's people can look down on the unbelieving, the psalm goes on to affirm that "there is none who does good, not even one", as Paul points out in Romans 3, quoting at length from Psalm 14.
To remind us of our own wayward hearts, as we chanted this psalm, we used for an antiphon (refrain) the phrase, "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love," from the hymn "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing" by Robert Robinson (1757).
