God interrupts Moses’ long and probably comfortable exile. After 40 years, his course seemed set: work, family, community. And then God shows up. Powerful. Holy. Personal. The whole trajectory of Moses’ life changes and through him, the whole trajectory of the Hebrew people.

God’s Witness

With their toes on the border of the Promised Land again, the Israelites receive from God a song that will be witness to them in their new home. They will teach the song to their children and their children’s children as a reminder: we are more sinful than we thought possible and God is more loving and gracious than we ever imagined.

The Israelites long road trip, as Pastor Jon likes to call it, was not aimless. God has a purpose every time he leads his people into the wilderness, and make no mistake, he’s still taking people there. Because it’s there that we learn to detach for things that are “not God” to attach to the one who meets our needs.

The Israelites are never satisfied and their complaints fill Moses’ ears over and over. That’s the nature of sin. It leaves us dissatisfied and mistrustful of God. If we’re honest, we’re all like the Israelites in our own way. And yet God keeps proving his faithfulness and demonstrating how Israel (and all of us) can rely on him.
