Step 4: Discerning Issues Biblically

Proverbs 23:7

February 21, 2021 • John Morrison • Proverbs 23:7

Generally speaking, there are accurate ways to discern the questions people bring. However, no one ever completely gets this “right” because there are usually more biblical issues going on in a given event or situation than any of us can identify. Our goal is (out of all they say) to identify clearly the most impactful issue for things like
1. Their walk with God,
2. Their safety and the safety of others,
3. The unity of their marriage (where applicable).
This list of “things like” is not comprehensive. It is a way to illustrate that when you look for what needs help, you have to zero in on some of the most important issues.

301 Class Twelve - Dealing with Resistance

July 25, 2021 • John Morrison, William Orth • Matthew 23:37

Resistance, or "push-back", when counseling an individual takes many forms. It may include not responding to deceit, changing the subject, shifting blame, angry resentment, or humorous redirection. It is inevitable that you will experience resistance as you encourage the person you are counseling to examine their motives. The Bible contains many examples of resistance. We will look at those examples, ways in which we might experience resistance while counseling, and how to counsel someone who shuts down when confronted.

301 Class Eleven - Moving from Pride to Humility

July 18, 2021 • John Morrison • Philippians 2:3

It is said that pride is at the core of all sin because the first sin of mankind required the pride of going against God’s command. We see the sin of pride played out in many of life's ordinary situations and need to equip each other to see that pride and move to humility. Our essential goal is to move from a self-focused perspective to a Christ-honoring one, from a “what do I want” focus to a “what does God want and what do others need” focus. We will look at some biblical ways to defeat pride in our lives.

301 Class Ten - Looking at Yourself

July 11, 2021 • John Morrison • Hebrews 3:12–13

It is important that we are aware of our daily dependence on the Lord and our need for heart renewal through God's Word. Even Paul examines himself and encourages the church to do likewise. We look at the prescription laid out in I Timothy 4:12-16 and ongoing principles for Christian counselors.
