For non-organic personal and relational problems, people who apply biblical truth in faith (Heb. 11:6; Rom. 10:17), in reliance on the Holy Spirit, will be able to respond as God would have them, removing or living with the problem. What’s more, they will grow to know and love and obey Him more, while almost all other approaches to helping people will go the opposite direction.

Resistance, or "push-back", when counseling an individual takes many forms. It may include not responding to deceit, changing the subject, shifting blame, angry resentment, or humorous redirection. It is inevitable that you will experience resistance as you encourage the person you are counseling to examine their motives. The Bible contains many examples of resistance. We will look at those examples, ways in which we might experience resistance while counseling, and how to counsel someone who shuts down when confronted.

It is said that pride is at the core of all sin because the first sin of mankind required the pride of going against God’s command. We see the sin of pride played out in many of life's ordinary situations and need to equip each other to see that pride and move to humility. Our essential goal is to move from a self-focused perspective to a Christ-honoring one, from a “what do I want” focus to a “what does God want and what do others need” focus. We will look at some biblical ways to defeat pride in our lives.
