This Sunday, we celebrate the ascension of our LORD Jesus. I don’t know about you, but when I look at the craziness of our world right now, my first thought is, “come quickly, LORD!” Then I wonder, “Why did Jesus leave in the first place?”
Of course, this question has eschatological (end times) significance and theological significance as we consider the current work of the Holy Spirit and our conscious dependency on Him. Jesus told his disciples that it was for their good that he was going away. “Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7).
Likewise, in writing to one of his favorite churches, the Apostle Paul praises the Ephesians in their faith and love -- while also prayerfully interceding that the Spirit would lead them into a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ. To this end, Paul prays that both minds and hearts would be open to God and that Jesus’ followers in Ephesus would live into the life for which they have been redeemed.
I know that we have much to be grateful for this weekend, and I hope you remember those for whom Memorial Day is intended. I also invite you to consider how the Holy Spirit is leading in your life, opening your mind and your heart to the will of the Father. An invitation to sacrifice your life for the sake of the gospel.
